What Proceeds From This CD Will Fund

The armed conflict in western Sudan has resulted in what has been described by the UN as “the worst humanitarian crisis of the century”. For 20 months, government-backed militia groups (Janjaweed) have killed and driven villagers from their homes, stolen their cattle, destroyed wells and burnt buildings. At least 80,000 people have lost their lives so far. A further 1.6 million have fled to urban areas or are living in 129 refugee camps across Darfur, an area the size of France, and over the border in Chad. While the international community has been active since the beginning of the crisis, the scale of the emergency means the needs are still immense. Darfur is one of the harshest environments on earth, yet most of the displaced people have to sleep in the open. Food and clean water are scarce, and floodwaters from recent rains are washing human and animal waste into water sources, contaminating them and causing outbreaks of disease. Thousands of children have been killed by the Janjaweed. Those who survived witnessed horrendous atrocities; many have lost one or both parents. These children need specialist care and to return to school. But education in the area is effectively at a standstill because existing schools are either seriously overcrowded with the influx of new children, or occupied by desperate, homeless families. Although Plan has worked in Sudan since the 1970s, up to now we have not worked in the Darfur region. However, we are anxious to do whatever we can to help alleviate the appalling suffering of the displaced children and families. While our main focus continues to be assistance to children and their communities through long-term development, we do respond to emergencies and offer help where we can. Indeed, last year we assisted flood victims in the Kassala region of eastern Sudan. Plan also has first-hand experience, from our work elsewhere, of the difficulties children and communities face as a result of disaster or conflict situations. As the threat of violence continues there is little hope of the people being able to return to their villages any time soon – in fact many may be too frightened ever to return. This has meant the relief effort has evolved from immediate emergency aid to also supporting families in the longer-term development of new communities. Therefore, Plan is now adding our particular expertise and resources to the relief effort, and will be working with UNICEF to provide essential life-saving services to the displaced people of Darfur – however, we urgently need your help. The programme will specifically benefit the children and families in the town of El Fasher and the displaced people’s camps of Abushouk and Zamzam in northern Darfur.
