We are a 4-piece melodic rock band called StandbY. We have been playing together since November 2001. Gerry, Bobby and Mark all met each other through our time at Stow College in Glasgow where we were studying Music & Audio technology (composing & arranging stream) at HND level.
We are each subtly different in style and tastes when it comes to our music, although there is a lot of common ground too, and this comes through in our sound and will become more apparent as time goes on and we begin to write more music as a group.
StandbY are:
Gerry Fitzimmons – Lead singer and guitarist.
Gerry hails from the Cumbernauld area, a few miles outside Glasgow. An accomplished singer, Gerry names Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell and Bono as his main influences. Gerry recently began writing for the band and his song “Stand in Line” is now included in the band repertoire. Gerry was a music prizewinner at Cumbernauld High School.
Bobby Currie – Lead Guitarist.
Bobby is from Dumbarton, at 25 years old he is the oldest member of the band. Bobby is the primary songwriter in the band. Influenced heavily by the early 90’s “grunge” movement, Bobby’s record collection is full of bands like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam. Bobby also enjoys bands like Muse, The Cooper Temple Clause, Incubus, Failure and Queens of the Stoneage.
Mark Connelly – Bass guitarist and backing vocals.
Mark is from East Kilbride. Mark was originally the drummer for the StandbY in their original line-up, but after leaving the band and subsequently returning he now does his thing with 4-strings. Mark is the muso of the band, a fantastic guitarist, bassist, drummer and a grade 8 saxophone player too! Mark has probably the most diverse taste in the band, Crowded House and Metallica being his top bands. Mark is also involved in power metal band Syth for whom he is the drummer.
William Welch – Drums.
Will is also from the Cumbernauld area, a very creative drummer, Will names Larry Mullen junior and Stewart Copeland as his main influences. Will has been playing drums for 11 years now, and is primarily self-taught. He has played for prize winning school bands as a teenager and is now looking to push on and make his mark in the music business. Willy and Gerry have been in bands together before and as soon as an opportunity arose for Willy to be involved he grabbed it with both hands.
Our aim as a band is to become one of the biggest Scottish bands, to have a strong live presence and to go on for as long as we can. We want to bring back stadium Rock music and travel the globe. Musically we are looking to fill the gap between Coldplay and the Foo Fighters, to provide both mellow and stirring rock music that crosses boundaries and appeals to the majority.
